Local and Hyperlocal SEO in Goa, India - Developing a low cost website and increasing visibility in search engines for a local or Hyperlocal business

By: Joseph de Souza

The main difference between local SEO and hyperlocal SEO is the coverage of the area that we wish to target. In case of Local SEO it is a city, or a small state or a part of an extremely large city. In hyperlocal SEO the intended target area is very precise, like a small town say Mapusa in North Goa with a population of around 60,000 or could even be Seminole Heights or Tampa heights neighborhood in Tampa city in USA which have population ranging from about 25,000 to 9,000 (Tampa city (USA has a poplulation of around 414,000). This makes your maximum targeted population much less than 100,000 to even as low as a few thousand people.
While local SEO helps your business capture customers across an entire city or a small region or state like Goa, hyperlocal SEO focuses on a small or tiny radius like a specific neighborhood, block, or street corner.

Difference Between Local SEO And Hyperlocal SEO

The main difference between local SEO and hyperlocal SEO is the geographic scale and intent precision of the target audience. While local SEO helps your business capture customers across an entire city or region like a small state such as Goa, hyperlocal SEO focuses on a microscopic radius like a small town, specific neighborhood, block, or street corner.
Typically hyperlocal SEO will target areas of about 10,000 to less than 80,000 population. Think of it like a dartboard: Local SEO aims for the outer rings (the city), while Hyperlocal SEO aiming directly for the bullseye (the immediate block surrounding your shop).

Setting up Google business profile for your Business

The first step is to register your business on Google Business Profile.
Search for your business: Type your business name to see if a profile already exists. If it appears and is unverified, click Claim this business. If it does not appear, click Add your business to Google. Your business name in Google business profile has to exactly match the official name of your business. Do not stuff keywords into your business name.
Choose your business type: Select whether your business is a local store, an online retail store, or a service-area business.
Select your category: Pick a specific category that best describes your primary product or service (e.g., "Restaurant", "Chinaware store", "Dentist" or "Plumber").
First decide your categories and choose the most appropriate one as your main category. Then add all the other appropriate categories as your secondary categories. For example, a crockery store with antique, Portuguese style, crockery selling dinner plates and decorative items of porcelain can choose pottery store or Chinaware store as the main category.
The additional categories will be first pottery Store or Chinaware Store which has not been used as the main category, second gift shop as well as additional categories that are available in the GBP for selection.
In retail, "Chinaware" is the standard industry classification for porcelain dinnerware, plates, and vessels. This is the most accurate, high-intent primary category for your niche and will help you rank for terms like "porcelain plates near me" or "fine dinnerware shop."
"Pottery store" is crucial for your vases. Google heavily associates vases and decorative porcelain items with pottery search intent.
"Gift shop" This is highly effective if your items are packaged or branded for gifting
"Home goods store" is another category that you can add if you want a broader reach
You can also check the categories that businesses similar to yours are using by using a free chrome plug-in. Add all relevant secondary categories to capture overlapping or niche categories as appropriate to your business.

Category Analysis of Crockery Store Panjim in Google Local Map pack

Add a location or service area: Enter a physical street address if customers visit you, or specify the regions and cities you serve if you operate without a storefront.
Enter contact details: Provide your primary business phone number and website link.
Verify your business: Complete the verification process (via phone, email, postcard, or video proof) so your profile goes live on Google Search and Maps.
Personalize your profile: Add your operating hours, services, business description, and high-quality photos. Keep regular hours, holiday hours, and special hours strictly up to date. Google penalizes profiles that frustrate users with closed doors or wrong hours. Check off all applicable attributes (e.g., wheelchair accessible, Wi-Fi, women-led, parking available).
Google Business Profile Products Section: Create product catalogs using searchable terms such as "Macao Style Blue and White Porcelain", "Portuguese-Inspired Dinner Sets", and "Heritage Wall Plates". Add individual products by uploading a clear, high-resolution photo against a neutral or complementary background to highlight the blue-printed details.
Enter the exact product name, assign it to the correct category, and set a price or price range if applicable. Write a short description for each product highlighting material quality, such as food-safe porcelain, microwave-safe glaze, or hand-finished Macao motifs.
For Service related businesses like Dentist, Plumber etc. fill out the services section completely. Write short, clear descriptions (around 250 characters) for each service using natural keywords.
Business Description: Write a compelling bio. Example: "Discover authentic, five-times fired Portuguese-Macao style blue printed crockery in Goa. We specialize in premium porcelain tableware, vintage-inspired teapots, and luxury home decor."
In general, a local business should naturally integrate their core services, unique selling points, and local city as well as neighborhood related keywords. Stay away from unnatural keyword stuffing.
Secondly, make sure that your NAP that is name, address and phone number are consistent across all local profiles registered in various directories.

Website For Local and Hyperlocal Business

Next we turn our attention to your website for a local or a hyperlocal business. You need a website so that people have easy access to information about your products or services. At the bare minimum, have a page for each category of products or each service in addition to a homepage and a contact page
For a service business, for example, dental clinic in Mapusa could structure the website like this homepage, the following service pages: Teeth Straightening (Orthodontics), Invisalign (Orthodontics), Pediatric Dentist (Pediatric Dentistry), Cosmetic Fillings (Cosmetic Dentistry), Teeth Whitening (Cosmetic Dentistry), Teeth Cleanings (Cosmetic Dentistry), Dental Checkups And Cleanings, Tooth Extractions, Dentures, Root Canal Therapy, Dental Implants, Dental Crowns and all other categories followed by the profile of the main practising dentist there as well as the contact page. More details on optimising websites for local businesses are given in SEO for Dentists and SEO for Plumbers.
For a very small hyperlocal business like a neighbourhood stationary shop or bakery, you can start out with the Homepage Page, Contact Page and two or three category pages.
The website will be static in nature and developed using a bootstrap 5 template or any simple css framework

Hyperlocal Website At Very Low Budget

For cash strapped businesses, You can still get a website for less than Rs20,000 inclusive of domain registration, hosting SSL Certificate (Security Certificate) and Web development. This is because Github allows free hosting of website with a custom domain and a SSL certificate is also free. You just have to register a domain name which will cost less than Rs2,000 per year and that is the only expense to keep it online, after the one time web development costs. Even if you have to shift to paid hosting later, it will cost you less than Rs250 a month, with the first 4 years billed at less than Rs 100 a month.

Increasing customers with SEO

If you want to further increase your customers, you must resort to SEO or search engine optimisation. This process will ensure that search engine crawlers and AI crawlers are able to properly access your website and the content is present in your website fully answers the searchers query.Besides that it will ensure that there are no technical issues with your website. For this the first step is keyword research.
First in case of a crockery store, first we put crockery store in the keyword research tools, and check the suggested keywords.

After that, we will try to find keywords by putting crockery store Goa and see the local keywords that are suggested.
The hyperlocal keywords and sometimes even the keywords with a local qualifier will not be reflected in any keyword research tools as the search volume will be very small.   .

So What Keywords Shall We Use For A Hyperlocal Business?

First of all Google suggest or Google autocomplete (on the search bar when typing the query), then people also ask questions and at the bottom of the search page "People also search for". These are keywords that people in the local area use to search for businesses like yours, but as the volume is very small, they are never reflected in the keyboard tools.

Besides these you can use the main keywords and then add local qualifiers. For example, a crockery store in Panjim, Goa can use crockery store, Panjim, Goa, as well as add Panjim,Goa to the title of each of the product pages so that someone searching for dinner plates in Panjim, will easily find your store as it will show up in search results for that query. This will also indicate to Google that your store is located in Panjim and customers will be able to easily find your store by searching in the search engines for your relevant products or services.
As another example below, you can see the Hyperlocal keywords for "dentist Mapusa"

Google suggest or Google autocomplete for Dentist Mapusa

People also search for keywords

Keyboard Mapping

After we have done the keyword research, we have to select the keywords suitable for each category or service page and make a keyboard map which shows which keywords are to be covered in which service or category page.
We select the most appropriate keywords and write content based on them so that all the relevant information is present on our page. Do not forget to add good quality photographs of your product.
We have to carry out keyboard research as well as write the content for each category of service page. If you lack resources you can start with about four service or category pages and the homepage. Examples of service pages are given in SEO for Dentists and SEO for Plumbers.

Example For a Bakery Cum Cake Shop In Mapusa, Goa

A small bakery in Mapusa which relies on walk in customers and home delivered orders in a small town like Mpausa, Goa can be classified as a hyperlocal business. For such a bakery which sells cakes, bread, buns, snacks as well as pastries and local sweets, will look at having a website and getting it visible in the search engines at minimal cost.
Such a hyperlocal bakery can have a home page, cake page, snacks page, Pastries and Local Sweets page as well as a contact page . The home page can target general bakery shop keywords.
We cannot do keyword research using hyperlocal keywords in keyword tools as the search volume will be very small and they will nort show up instead we search for head terms and add local and hyperlocal qualifiers like "Bakery Mapusa, Goa".
For a larger bakery that caters to customers , say all over Bardez, North Goa it is recommended to have a larger website with the pages targeting specific terms like "Black Forest Cake", "Birthday Cake" or "custom made cakes" .
It is best that you do not write the price list on the website if you are a small bakery as for such type of low cost website(static), you will require the help of a developer to change them. You can provide the price list via whatsapp or email.
For a hyperlocal bakery in Mapusa here are screenshots of the keywords suggested by Google.
